Navigating a new environment while struggling with anger proved difficult, hindering his ability to thrive in a traditional classroom setting. Initially enrolled in the day program, Markus experienced a turning point when he transitioned to the residential program. Living within a structured environment with clear expectations and consistent support from staff and peers, Markus began to develop crucial coping skills. He recalls a pivotal moment in second grade where he discovered deep breathing as a self-regulation technique, a “superpower” that helped him gain control in challenging situations. This structured setting, combined with personalized attention, laid the groundwork for his subsequent engagement with one of Green Chimneys’ most distinctive features: its animal care programs.

The Farm & Wildlife Center at Green Chimneys quickly became an integral part of Markus’s therapeutic journey. His innate connection with animals provided him with a unique avenue for emotional regulation and skill development. “They seem to know when you’re stressed,” Markus observed, highlighting the intuitive and calming presence of animals. This connection blossomed into active participation in animal care, encompassing a wide range of farm activities and culminating in a prestigious apprenticeship in the Teaching Barn. This earned position, reflecting significant responsibility and independence, allowed Markus to deepen his involvement in animal care and solidify his skills. Danielle Powers, Program Assistant, emphasizes Markus’s dedication and empathy: “Not only is he a good worker, he’s very empathetic towards the animals… He is responsible and really takes pride in his work at the farm.” Whether cleaning stalls or assisting with sheep hoof trimming, Markus’s commitment to animal care showcases the practical skills and emotional growth fostered by these programs.

Beyond the farm, Markus explored other avenues for growth and self-expression. Participation in swimming and basketball provided physical outlets and opportunities for teamwork and mentorship. His relationship with Teaching Assistant Gui Martins, forged through basketball, became particularly significant. Gui served as a trusted mentor, offering guidance and support that extended beyond sports, contributing to Markus’s emotional and mental resilience. Markus credits Gui with helping him become “physically, mentally and emotionally stronger,” emphasizing the holistic approach to student development at Green Chimneys, which integrates diverse activities alongside animal care programs.

Markus’s creative talents also flourished during his time at Green Chimneys. Inspired by his experiences and supported by the school’s environment, he wrote his own novel, Markoreus The Fallen. Gui Martins, who also worked with Markus in the library, noted the positive impact of this environment on his writing: “I started working with Markus in his Junior year and I’m convinced all his time in the library helped his writing skills flourish… He’s an incredibly artistic individual.” This literary achievement, alongside his artistic pursuits, demonstrates the breadth of Markus’s development and the nurturing environment that Green Chimneys provides for students with special educational needs.

Reflecting on Markus’s overall progress, social worker Jenna Eckna highlights his significant growth in interpersonal skills and self-awareness. Through consistent support and feedback from both school and residential staff, Markus has developed a deeper understanding of himself and his interactions with others. This enhanced self-advocacy, as Jenna notes, allows him to effectively seek help when needed, a crucial skill for future independence. Markus himself offers valuable advice to future Green Chimneys students: “The one thing I would tell future residents and students of Green Chimneys is that you have to keep going… Hang in there and always remember what’s at the end of the rainbow of life.” His words encapsulate the resilience and forward-looking perspective he has gained, attributes nurtured through Green Chimneys’ comprehensive approach, including its impactful animal care programs for special education.
