Air Force Recovery Care Program: Comprehensive Support for Wounded Airmen and Their Families

The Air Force Recovery Care Program is a dedicated initiative designed to provide extensive non-medical support to Wounded Warrior Airmen and their families. This crucial program, also known as the Recovery Coordination Process, effectively organizes and delivers essential resources to support families when an Airman or Guardian experiences serious wounds, illness, or injuries, including those requiring medical evacuation. Understanding that each family’s needs are unique, the Recovery Care Program ensures a personalized approach, tailoring assistance, information, and support to meet individual family circumstances and preferences. The Air Force Wounded Warrior Program (AFW2) office, located at Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC), Randolph AFB, TX, administers this vital program.

When an Airman or Guardian faces the challenges of being wounded, ill, or injured, the Care Management Team (CMT) steps in to provide comprehensive support, addressing both medical and non-medical needs. This support spans from the initial point of injury through reintegration and transition, whether back to military service or into civilian life. Recovery Care Coordinators (RCCs) are central to this process, acting as the primary point of contact and the embodiment of the Recovery Coordination Process at the installation level. RCCs are dedicated to ensuring that Wounded, Ill, or Injured Airmen or Guardians receive the necessary non-medical support to facilitate their desired life outcomes. The CMT diligently executes the Recovery Coordination Process, advocating for and supporting the Airmen or Guardians under their care.

Non-medical Care Managers (NMCMs) are integral members of the CMT, working closely with RCCs in the field, particularly during the critical phases of reintegration, transition, and sustainment. NMCMs offer vital assistance with navigating benefits and entitlements, especially for Airmen transitioning to the civilian sector. They proactively address and resolve issues related to benefits and compensation, administrative and personnel paperwork, housing and transportation, both before and during the transition process, and tackle any other challenges that may arise. A key aspect of the NMCM’s role is to connect Airmen with the Department of Veteran Affairs, ensuring seamless access to future healthcare and benefits/compensation, thereby providing long-term support and security.
