We extend a warm welcome to the LSUHSC-University Hospital and Clinics (UHC) Family Medicine Residency Program! Originally established in Lake Charles in 1972, our program moved to Lafayette in 1989 with a clear vision: to train family medicine physicians capable of delivering comprehensive medical care to hospitals and local communities, ensuring lifelong medical care is accessible to all.

In 2013, our partnership with Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) broadened our clinical training landscape. While maintaining strong educational rotations at UHC, our residents now benefit from key experiences at LGMC, offering a diverse and robust training environment.

Our primary goal is to provide comprehensive, continuous, and family-oriented primary care training that promotes overall patient wellness. Residents gain practical experience at the Family Medicine Center (FMC), University Hospital and Clinics, Lafayette General Medical Center, nursing homes, and private physician offices.

At our FMC, residents and nurses work collaboratively as a care team, providing same-day and urgent care appointments and managing patient health and wellness proactively. Residents manage their own continuity panel of patients, addressing a broad spectrum of acute and chronic conditions. Our training is grounded in high-quality care, informed by the latest scientific knowledge and guided by our dedicated academic faculty.

With 25 resident positions, we offer comprehensive educational experiences in outpatient care, inpatient medicine, ICU, OB/GYN, pediatrics, and more. Our faculty are proficient in GI procedures, offering EGD and colonoscopy training. Our unique sports medicine program provides residents the opportunity to serve as team physicians for local high school and college athletes and cover mass participation events, professional sports, and collegiate events with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) athletic program.

Physicians trained here will possess the expertise to care for a wide range of patients across the full spectrum of family medicine, ensuring lifelong medical care for individuals and families. Having trained over 200 practicing family physicians, our program emphasizes continuity of care and prepares you for a fulfilling career. Many of our graduates choose to remain in Southwestern Louisiana, contributing to the health of our community.

We invite you to become part of our Family Medicine Residency Program in Lafayette, a community rich in culture and heritage. As we say in South Louisiana, “laissez les bons temps rouler” – “let the good times roll”!
