Anthem Maternity Care Program: Supporting Healthy Pregnancies and Newborns

Substance use disorders (SUDs) during pregnancy are a growing concern, impacting both mothers and their babies. For women of childbearing age, especially those pregnant or planning to become pregnant, addressing SUDs is critical. Obstetric providers are in a unique position to intervene and guide women towards healthier choices, mitigating the risks associated with substance misuse for both themselves and their children. Identifying, treating, and connecting women who are struggling with substance use to appropriate resources are vital steps in this process. The Anthem Maternity Care Program is dedicated to providing comprehensive support for providers, expectant mothers, and their newborns throughout this journey.

Anthem NICU Care Management Program: Ensuring Quality Care for High-Risk Infants

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Care Management program within Anthem is deeply committed to ensuring that every high-risk infant receives a comprehensive and effective plan for quality, cost-conscious NICU care. Our program is designed to facilitate a smooth and successful transition from the NICU to the home environment. We employ a seamless, integrated approach that includes the early identification of members who would benefit from NICU Care Management, proactive enrollment, consistent engagement, and ongoing oversight throughout the entire care process until case closure.

We strongly believe in the importance of parent and caregiver involvement in their infant’s care while they are hospitalized in the NICU. Our primary focus is on supporting parents of infants who are anticipated to require hospitalization for more than two weeks. This includes babies born prematurely at 34 weeks gestation or earlier, infants weighing 2,000 grams or less at birth, newborns with major congenital anomalies, babies requiring ventilator support, or those needing major surgical interventions. We offer specialized education and dedicated support to help parents navigate the daily stresses of having a baby in the NICU. We actively encourage their participation in their baby’s care and provide resources to help them prepare both themselves and their homes for the discharge process.

Recognizing the significant emotional toll of having a critically ill infant in the NICU, we understand that parents and loved ones are at risk of experiencing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. To mitigate the potential impact of PTSD within our member families, we offer proactive assistance by:

  • Connecting parents with hospital-based support programs, when available, and facilitating access to targeted support services and provider referrals.
  • Conducting PTSD screenings for parents approximately one month after the infant’s birth.
  • Providing referrals to behavioral health program resources as needed based on screening results.
  • Following up with families one month after the initial contact to assess whether parents have benefited from the initial support and PTSD awareness information provided.

Our dedicated case managers are readily available to assist you and your patients. For further information regarding the Anthem NICU Care Management program, or to refer a patient who could benefit from these specialized services, please contact Provider Services at 1-800-450-8753, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
