Turn Your Old Car into Hope: The American Red Cross Car Donation Program

Turning in your old vehicle doesn’t have to be a tedious trade-in process or a hassle with private buyers. Just ask Irene and Dennis Moore, who found a remarkably easy and rewarding alternative: donating to the American Red Cross Car Donation Program. For years, the Moores have been generously donating their used family cars to the Red Cross, finding it a simple way to support a cause they deeply believe in. As Irene Moore stated, “It’s an easy way to donate, and I appreciate the work the Red Cross does for so many people. It’s such a worthy cause.”

Over several years, the Moores have donated an impressive four vehicles, including minivans, an SUV, and even a Cadillac. Their consistent support highlights the effortless nature and significant impact of the American Red Cross car donation program. Currently driving a 2012 Subaru, Irene is already planning her next donation to the Red Cross when the time comes.

By participating in the American Red Cross Vehicle Donation Program, donors like the Moores receive valuable benefits. Beyond the satisfaction of contributing to a vital organization, donors are eligible for a tax deduction. This eliminates the typical burdens of selling a used car, such as negotiating trade-in values or managing classified ads. Instead, donors experience the peace of mind that comes from knowing their vehicle’s sale proceeds directly fuel the Red Cross’s crucial mission.

The Moores’ connection to the Red Cross is deeply personal. Inspired by their daughter’s need for a blood transfusion as an infant, they became dedicated supporters. Irene, a retired microbiologist, believes their donations teach their teenage children the importance of valuing giving over material possessions. This act of donating cars exemplifies a powerful lesson in altruism and community support.

The American Red Cross car donation program, operational in Illinois for many years, expanded nationwide in 2013. Managed through a partnership with Charitable Adult Rides and Services (CARS), the program accepts a wide array of vehicles. From cars and trucks to motorcycles, RVs, and even non-operational vehicles, the Red Cross welcomes almost anything with a motor, regardless of its condition.

LaKeva Lucas, Operations Manager for the Vehicle Donation Program, explains the streamlined process: “The vehicle is hauled away at no cost to the donor and then sold by the IAA’s Donation Division. The proceeds then go to the Red Cross, where an average of 90 cents of every dollar is invested in delivering care and comfort to those in need.” Lucas emphasizes the often-underestimated value of older vehicles, stating, “People may think their old vehicle is worthless, but the donation could be priceless to someone in need of Red Cross services.”

Donating your car to the American Red Cross car donation program is more than just getting rid of an old vehicle. It’s an act of compassion that provides essential resources for disaster relief, blood services, and numerous other community programs. It’s a chance to create good karma, just like the Moores have discovered, by turning your used car into hope and help for those who need it most.
