Destiny King is a dedicated arts leader, musician, and advocate hailing from rural North Carolina, making significant strides in the arts and music education sector. A recent graduate with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and a minor in Arts Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), Destiny has consistently demonstrated her commitment and expertise in the field. Her participation in Tessitura’s Career Accelerator Program further solidified her skills and readiness for leadership roles in arts administration.
During her impactful three-year tenure on the North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA) Board for the Collegiate Section, Destiny showcased exceptional leadership. As president, she pioneered the NCMEA Collegiate Conference Scholarships and organized chamber music initiatives for marginalized communities and underrepresented school programs at the NCMEA conference. Her contributions were recognized with the prestigious Ruth Jewell Scholarship, underscoring her dedication to music education and access.
Destiny’s musical talents extend to her proficiency with the oboe, performing with esteemed ensembles such as UNCG’s Middle Eastern Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. Currently, she performs with and directs marketing efforts for Appalachia: A Southeastern Wind Symphony (ASWS), blending her artistic and administrative capabilities. Her practical experience in arts administration is further enriched by marketing internships at non-profit organizations including Lyrica Baroque, SHIELD Mentor Program, and Eastern Music Festival.
Completing the Hands-On Ticketing Track within the Tessitura Career Accelerator Program has provided Destiny with invaluable expertise in a leading CRM software utilized by arts and cultural organizations worldwide. This experience positions her as a highly competent professional ready to tackle the challenges of modern arts administration.
As a Creative Generation summer resident, Destiny undertook a significant capstone project, Amplifying the Voices of Black Pedagogy, focusing on the arts education ecosystem in North and South Carolina. Through narrative storytelling, she aimed to document systemic barriers within Black pedagogy in music education, further demonstrating her commitment to equity and inclusion in the arts. Her contributions also include blog series for Creative Generation, exploring themes of Eldership, Hometown Stories, and Ways of Knowing.
