WakeMed Health & Hospitals has long been recognized for its dedication to superior, evidence-based patient care and community health. Pioneering the integration of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), WakeMed has consistently championed their vital role within the healthcare system. This commitment culminated in the evolution of their post-graduate training, notably marked by the acute care nurse practitioner residency programs available around 2020 and beyond.
Originally established in 2008 as the “General Surgery/Trauma PA Residency Program,” WakeMed’s initiative has expanded significantly. Starting with just two Physician Assistant (PA) residents, the program underwent a transformative phase. By 2020, it officially rebranded as the “WakeMed APP Fellowship Program,” signaling a broader inclusivity by welcoming both PAs and Nurse Practitioners (NPs). This pivotal year also witnessed the program’s curriculum diversify from a single track to five specialized areas of focus. The growth trajectory continued, with the addition of two more tracks in 2021 and a further three in 2022. Currently, the program boasts an impressive ten distinct tracks, encompassing a wide spectrum of medical specialties.
To date, the WakeMed APP Fellowship Program has proudly graduated 45 APPs since its inception in 2008. These alumni have successfully transitioned into a diverse range of specialties and prestigious institutions, a testament to the program’s robust training and comprehensive curriculum.
