It’s commonly understood that overcoming substance use disorders often begins with intensive inpatient treatment. However, this initial phase is just the starting point on the path to lasting recovery. Sustaining sobriety requires ongoing support and strategies, especially in the crucial period immediately following intensive treatment.
Extensive research emphasizes the importance of post-treatment and long-term continuing care in maintaining recovery. Studies, such as Kassani et al. (2015), have consistently shown that the highest risk of relapse occurs shortly after completing intensive addiction treatment. Brecht and Herbeck (2015), in their research on methamphetamine use and treatment outcomes, highlighted that “…the highest rates of relapse occurred early in the post-treatment period, with half…relapsing within six months.” McLellan (2002) further emphasized the necessity of sustained support, arguing that for individuals to thrive and for society to benefit fully, “…treatment benefits should be sustained for at least 6 months following discharge for addiction treatment.”
Recognizing this critical need, Cedar’s Extended Care Program offers vital resources designed to bridge the gap between intensive treatment and community-based recovery. Through a structured approach incorporating education, therapy, and peer support, this program facilitates a smoother transition and strengthens the foundation for long-term sobriety. Participants in our Extended Care Program engage in online sessions five days a week (Monday-Friday), creating a supportive community where they can learn, process experiences, and grow together, guided by Cedar’s team of highly qualified clinicians.

Reciprocal Support Group: Fostering Connection and Stability. This module provides a safe and inclusive environment where participants can both give and receive support. Sharing experiences and challenges with peers who understand the recovery journey is invaluable for building a sense of community and reducing feelings of isolation, which are often triggers for relapse.
Resiliency Building: Strengthening Your Recovery Foundation. Life inevitably presents challenges. This module focuses on developing personal resilience, equipping participants with the tools to bounce back from difficult situations and life events without turning to substance use. By increasing personal fortitude, individuals learn to navigate stressors in a healthy and constructive manner.
Self-Compassion: Cultivating Inner Strength and Kindness. The journey of recovery can be demanding, and self-criticism can be a significant obstacle. This module teaches essential skills to quiet the inner critic and cultivate self-compassion. Participants learn to nurture their “inner champion,” fostering a positive self-image and building a more supportive internal dialogue, crucial for maintaining long-term well-being.
Anxiety Regulation: Managing Triggers and Building Coping Mechanisms. Anxiety is a common experience in early recovery and can be a significant trigger for relapse. This module provides insight into the barriers anxiety creates and equips participants with practical skills to manage and overcome these challenges. Learning effective anxiety regulation techniques is vital for navigating daily life and maintaining sobriety.
Mindfulness: Living in the Present Moment. Mindfulness practices are powerful tools for staying grounded and present. This module develops awareness strategies and techniques to enhance present moment focus as an integral part of daily living. By cultivating mindfulness, participants can reduce reactivity to cravings and triggers, fostering a greater sense of control and peace in their recovery journey.
