Thank you for exploring the Pediatric Residency Program at Advocate Children’s Hospital – Oak Lawn (ACH-OL). Situated on the campus of Advocate Christ Medical Center (ACMC), our free-standing children’s hospital has been a cornerstone of pediatric medical education for nearly five decades.
Our program is deeply committed to fostering well-rounded pediatricians. We achieve this through a carefully balanced curriculum that integrates rigorous academic learning with diverse clinical experiences. Residents gain exposure to both hospital-based tertiary care and community-based primary care, serving a patient population that reflects a broad spectrum of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. At Advocate Children’s Hospital – Oak Lawn program, we prioritize personalized attention to each resident’s growth and well-being, creating a supportive yet challenging environment where they can maximize their strengths and reach their full potential as future pediatric healthcare advocates.
Advantageously positioned within the expansive Advocate Health Care network, one of the nation’s largest and most respected not-for-profit healthcare systems, ACH-OL offers unparalleled opportunities for our residents. This unique setting allows for a comprehensive pediatric training experience, building a robust foundation for careers in both primary and subspecialty pediatric care. Our goal is to cultivate exceptional pediatricians ready to advocate for health care, particularly for children.
The cornerstone of our program’s success lies in the rich diversity of the families we serve, coupled with an educational approach that ensures clinical experiences are both meaningful and readily applicable. Advocate Children’s Hospital – Oak Lawn is located in Oak Lawn, a suburb directly bordering the underserved urban areas of Chicago’s South Side. This strategic location allows us to serve a vast and varied patient population, extending beyond Chicago to include its southern and southwestern suburbs, parts of northwest Indiana, and even more rural communities in north central Illinois. This diverse patient base presents a wide range of clinical cases, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. Our dedicated faculty delivers comprehensive primary and subspecialty, medical, and surgical care, with our residents playing an essential role in both patient care and the learning process within our high-volume, child-focused hospital. Crucially, our residents gain invaluable experience outside the hospital setting, engaging with communities, homes, and schools. This holistic approach provides a profound understanding of health and wellness that extends far beyond diagnosing and treating illnesses, shaping them into effective health care advocates.
We proudly collaborate in medical education with our core clerkship affiliates, Rosalind Franklin University’s Chicago Medical School and Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as fourth-year medical students from across the nation. This creates abundant opportunities for teaching, impactful quality improvement projects, and clinical research, all under the expert guidance of our faculty. We are particularly proud to have received commendations from the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for our innovative Community and Advocacy curriculum, as well as our Evidence-Based Medicine training. Our program also boasts an outstanding American Board of Pediatrics Certification Exam passing rate and successful placements in Pediatric Fellowships, Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine, and Pediatric Primary Care upon completion, further solidifying our commitment to training future child health advocates.
The Pediatric Residency Program at ACH-OL is dedicated to developing residents into outstanding pediatricians – critical thinkers, compassionate advocates, and caring leaders in children’s health.
