This free program is open to young adults aged 14 to 17 and offers a hands-on introduction to what it means to be a firefighter and first responder. As a Fire Explorer, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the fire service through direct training with Fire Department Officers. You’ll participate in valuable community service projects, engage in city events, test your skills in competitions, and contribute to fundraising initiatives. This program is phase one of the broader Boynton Beach Fire Rescue C.A.R.E.S Program, laying the foundation for future advancement and opportunities.

During your time as an Explorer, you will develop essential skills that are crucial for both fire service and life in general, including:

  • Teamwork, Self-Confidence, and Leadership Skills: Learn to work effectively in a team, build confidence in your abilities, and develop leadership qualities.
  • Forcible Entry, Search and Rescue, and Ladder Training: Get hands-on experience with essential firefighting techniques.
  • Ropes and Knots, Hose, Tools, Strategies, and Tactics: Master the tools and tactics used by firefighters in various emergency situations.
  • CPR, Stop the Bleed, and EMS First Aid Skills: Acquire critical life-saving skills in emergency medical response.

Each year, Explorers have the opportunity to participate in Firematics competitions, including events in Daytona Beach during the Annual Fire Service Leadership Weekend and the Fire Rescue East conference sponsored by the Florida Fire Chiefs Association. The Explorer program commences in October 2022, with meetings held twice a month on Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Station #5 (2080 High Ridge Road). Additional events and activities may be scheduled periodically.

Elevate Your Expertise with the C.A.R.E.S. Cadet Program (Ages 18-21)

For those ready to take the next step, the C.A.R.E.S. Cadet Program is designed for young adults aged 18-21 who have prior experience in fire service programs, such as the Explorer Program or high school Fire Science programs, or are pursuing post-secondary education in a related field. The Cadet Program is phase two of the Boynton Beach Fire Rescue C.A.R.E.S Program and builds upon the Explorer Program, offering advanced training and preparation for a professional career.

Fire Cadets will further enhance their understanding of the fire service, continue to train with Fire Department Officers, and participate in community service, city events, and competitions. The Cadet Program focuses on preparing you for professional certifications and career entry, offering opportunities for scholarships towards basic Fire Certifications and EMT/Paramedic School.

The Cadet Program curriculum includes:

  • State Certification Exam Preparation: Get ready to ace your certification exams required for professional firefighting.
  • EMT/Paramedic Preparation: Receive specialized training to prepare for a career as an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic.
  • Interview & Fire School Preparation: Develop essential skills for job interviews and navigating fire academy.
  • Community Outreach: Engage with the community and understand the broader role of fire rescue services.
  • Mentorship & Peer to Peer Connection: Learn from experienced mentors and build a network with peers in the field.
  • Advanced Firefighting Skills: Further develop your skills in areas like Forcible Entry, Search and Rescue, and Ladder operations.
  • Tactical Operations: Refine your knowledge of Ropes and Knots, Hose, Tools, Strategies, and Tactics used in complex scenarios.
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Skills: Expand your expertise in CPR, Stop the Bleed, and EMS First Aid.

Cadets will participate in EMT/Paramedic Training, often held at Palm Beach State College Lake Worth Campus (4200 Congress Ave.), to prepare for their State Certification exam. The Cadet Program also commences in October 2022, with meetings mirroring the Explorer Program schedule – twice monthly on Wednesdays at Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Station #5.
