Alamo Colleges: Tuition-Free Pathway to Health Care Careers for Charter, Private, and Home School Graduates

The Alamo Colleges District is extending a remarkable opportunity to 2023 graduates from charter, private, and home schools in Bexar County. The AlamoPROMISE program, a “last-dollar” scholarship, is now accessible to these graduates, paving the way for tuition-free education and access to vital health care programs and services. This initiative aims to support students pursuing associate degrees, certifications, transfer courses, or workforce training at any of the five Alamo Colleges: Northeast Lakeview College, Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, San Antonio College, and St. Philip’s College.

Previously, AlamoPROMISE was available to graduates from 73 participating high schools across 20 area school districts. This expansion underscores the Alamo Colleges District’s commitment to ensuring all San Antonio students have the chance to achieve educational and career success. Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores stated, “By giving students a step up on their educational journey, we are accelerating the elimination of poverty through education in our community.” This expansion is a significant step towards making higher education and health care careers more accessible to a broader range of students.

AlamoPROMISE is not just about tuition. It’s a comprehensive support system designed to help students succeed. Beyond covering tuition and mandatory fees for up to three years or until an associate degree is earned, the program provides AlamoPROMISE Scholars with access to crucial wraparound services. These services include dedicated advising, career services to guide students towards fulfilling professions, and importantly, comprehensive mental and physical healthcare services. This holistic approach recognizes that student success is influenced by various factors, and addressing health and wellbeing is paramount. Furthermore, financial assistance and support for other challenges that might hinder academic progress are also available.

For those interested in seizing this opportunity, it is crucial to ‘save your seat’ and meet all program requirements. This includes completing admissions and financial aid applications (FAFSA or TASFA) for the Fall 2023 term. Eligibility is based on a first-come, first-served basis due to limited space, urging prospective students to act promptly. AlamoPROMISE ensures that after all other forms of financial aid are applied, eligible students’ tuition and fees are covered. This initiative makes the dream of higher education and a path towards health care careers a reality for many more students in Bexar County.
