Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute® was established in June 2013 through the merger of two distinguished organizations: Courage Center® and Sister Kenny Institute®, also known as Sister Kenny®. Both brought a rich history of dedicated service to individuals with disabilities and chronic medical conditions. This union strengthened our commitment to innovative and compassionate care, further enhancing the principles of the Allina Partner Care Program.
Courage Center, founded in 1928 as the Minnesota Society for Crippled Children and Adults, was built on a foundation of advocacy, adaptive sports and recreation, camping, and comprehensive rehabilitation. The dedication of the Golden Valley facility in 1973 marked a significant milestone, followed by expansions into Stillwater, Burnsville, Forest Lake, and Duluth.
Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, established in Minneapolis in 1942 by Australian nurse Sister Elizabeth Kenny, revolutionized muscle rehabilitation. Her pioneering principles became the bedrock of modern physical therapy. The Institute quickly rose to national prominence as a leading rehabilitation center, renowned for its forward-thinking and innovative approach to patient care, reflecting the values now embodied in the Allina Partner Care Program.
