MetroHealth System’s PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency program is committed to developing highly skilled and autonomous ambulatory care pharmacists. Graduates of this program are envisioned as integral members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, leveraging their comprehensive knowledge and exceptional communication skills to advance pharmacy practice. They are prepared to foster strong inter-departmental collaborations, demonstrate unwavering dedication to their healthcare organizations, and exhibit a profound commitment to the pharmacy profession.

A key strength of the MetroHealth program lies in its track record of resident career advancement. Graduates consistently secure desirable ambulatory care positions within the MetroHealth System, throughout the Cleveland area, and across the nation. This success is attributed to the mentorship of highly qualified and experienced preceptors who are dedicated to preparing residents for impactful careers in contemporary pharmacy practice.

The residency curriculum is thoughtfully structured, incorporating longitudinal rotations to facilitate the development of strong patient-pharmacist relationships through managing their own patient panels. Shorter, focused block rotations allow for exploration of specialized ambulatory care practice areas. As residents demonstrate competency and progress through the program, they gain the opportunity to become credentialed and privileged to practice under collaborative practice agreements, enhancing their autonomy and patient care responsibilities.

Explore the curriculum in detail and learn more about the application process to join the MetroHealth PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency program. Resident rotations are primarily based at MetroHealth Medical Center (Main Campus) but also extend to various MetroHealth outpatient locations, including Parma, Old Brooklyn, Broadway, Beachwood, and Bedford, offering diverse practice experiences.

The Core Purpose of PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residencies: Building upon PharmD education and PGY1 residency training, PGY2 ambulatory care programs are purposefully designed to cultivate pharmacist practitioners who possess advanced knowledge, refined skills, and expanded abilities within the specialized domain of ambulatory care. These competencies are meticulously defined by educational outcomes, goals, and objectives tailored for advanced practice areas. Successful completion of a PGY2 residency program signifies readiness for advanced patient care roles, specialized positions within the profession, and board certification in ambulatory care pharmacy, when available.

PGY2 residency programs uniquely empower residents to function with increasing independence as practitioners. They are challenged to conceptualize and synthesize their growing experience and knowledge, seamlessly integrating these elements into the provision of patient care and other advanced practice settings. Accredited PGY2 pharmacy residencies, such as the program at MetroHealth, are recognized as a pivotal step in preparing pharmacists for leadership in patient care, academia, or other specialized pharmacy roles, alongside achieving board certification in their chosen specialty.
