While initially supported by a five-year grant, the PATHS program has demonstrated its value and sustainability, becoming self-sufficient through a combination of family contributions and support from the Texas Workforce Commission. Serving approximately 25 to 30 students annually from across Texas, the PATHS program offers three distinct professional tracks, with a strong emphasis on preparing students for careers in elder care through its Direct Support Professional general track. The curriculum provides in-depth training relevant to nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospice units, ensuring graduates possess the specific skills and sensitivities required to excel in these environments.

Developing independent living skills is a cornerstone of the PATHS program. Students learn to navigate the Texas A&M campus and utilize public transportation systems, essential skills for future employment and personal independence, regardless of their chosen track, including elder care.

Students spend four days a week engaged in hands-on work experiences within their chosen area, such as elder care facilities, and one day in class.
