Substance use disorders and the complexities of neonatal intensive care are significant concerns for expectant and new parents. Recognizing these challenges, the Anthem Blue Care Consultant Program is dedicated to providing robust support for both mothers and their newborns. This program empowers healthcare providers and ensures that pregnant women and infants receive the comprehensive care they need for healthier outcomes.
Addressing Substance Use Disorders During Pregnancy
The rise in substance use disorders (SUDs) among women of childbearing age necessitates focused intervention and support. Obstetric providers are uniquely positioned to intervene and guide women toward recovery, mitigating potential health risks for both the mother and her child. The Anthem Blue Care Consultant Program emphasizes the critical steps of identification, treatment, and referral for pregnant women struggling with substance use. Anthem is committed to standing alongside providers, expectant mothers, and their babies, offering resources and guidance throughout this journey.

Specialized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Program
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Program within the Anthem Blue Care Consultant Program is deeply committed to delivering high-quality, cost-effective care for high-risk infants. The program focuses on ensuring a well-structured plan for each infant’s NICU stay and a seamless transition to their home environment. Through an integrated approach, the program facilitates early identification, enrollment, and ongoing management of care throughout the NICU stay and until case closure.
Parent and caregiver involvement is central to the NICU program. It is specifically designed to support parents of infants expected to remain in the NICU for more than two weeks, including those born prematurely (at 34 weeks gestation or earlier), with low birth weight (2,000 grams or less), with significant congenital anomalies, requiring ventilator support, or needing major surgery. The program provides vital education and support to help parents navigate the emotional and practical challenges of having a baby in the NICU. This includes empowering them to actively participate in their baby’s care and preparing their home environment for discharge.
Recognizing the profound stress associated with having a critically ill infant in the NICU, the Anthem program also addresses the potential for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms in parents. Support mechanisms include:
- Connecting parents with hospital-based support programs and relevant provider referrals.
- Offering PTSD screening for parents approximately one month after birth.
- Providing referrals to behavioral health resources when indicated.
- Conducting a follow-up call one month post-birth to ensure parents have benefited from initial support and PTSD awareness.
Anthem’s dedicated case managers are readily available to assist you. For further details regarding the NICU Care Management program or to refer a patient, please contact Provider Services at 1-800-450-8753, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
