Facing challenges with energy bills in Kent County, Michigan? The Salvation Army’s Energy Assistance Services (EAS) is dedicated to supporting low-income households through energy crises. This program offers a helping hand by providing potential bill payment assistance, enrollment in energy company subsidy programs, and comprehensive case management services. The primary aim is to bolster household financial stability and empower customers to achieve their personal goals. Typically, an EAS Case Specialist will conduct a one-on-one meeting with each applicant to ascertain eligibility and explore opportunities for additional support.
EAS is made possible through funding from the State of Michigan, collaborations with energy providers like Consumers Energy, DTE Energy, and Michigan Gas Utilities, and generous contributions from individuals and corporations.
Applying for Energy Assistance: A Step-by-Step Guide
To access the Energy Assistance Services, please follow these two essential steps:
STEP ONE: Initiate Your Application Through Michigan Bridges for State Emergency Relief (SER)
Effective October 1, 2024, applying online through Michigan Bridges is a mandatory first step.

After completing Step One, proceed to apply online directly to The Salvation Army.

To ensure a smooth application process, please have the following documents ready for your energy assistance appointment:
- Identification: A valid form of ID for the primary applicant. Acceptable forms include:
- Driver’s License
- State ID
- Passport or Green Card
- Birth Certificate
- Social Security Numbers: Social Security Numbers for all members of your household.
- Proof of Income: Documentation verifying your household’s most recent income for the past 45 days.
- Bank Statement: Your most recent bank statement.
- Utility Bill: The most recent copy of the energy bill for which you are seeking assistance.
