Empowering IBPOC Leaders in Research Libraries: The ARL Leadership & Career Development Program

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is thrilled to announce the selection of 24 fellows for its prestigious . This intensive 13-month fellowship is dedicated to cultivating a vibrant community of IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, and People of Color) leaders within research libraries and archives, ensuring a more diverse and inclusive future for these critical institutions.

The ARL Leadership & Career Development Program is meticulously designed to build upon the existing expertise of its fellows. It fosters a supportive environment where participants can critically examine their leadership approaches, expand their self-awareness, and accelerate their career trajectories. Fellows benefit from a rich curriculum that includes two immersive Learning Summits, on-site visits to ARL libraries, monthly educational sessions addressing contemporary issues in library leadership, and personalized mentorship from seasoned ARL library directors and senior leaders. Furthermore, the program incorporates self-assessments and career coaching to provide individualized support, and offers opportunities to attend ARL Association Meetings and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Membership Meeting.

Hana Kim, director of the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library at the University of Toronto and a member of the LCDP Selection Working Group, highlighted the significance of the program: “Being an LCDP Fellow was transformative, and witnessing the caliber of this year’s applicants has been equally inspiring. Their talent and dedication are remarkable. I am excited to see how this innovative group will shape the future of research libraries and archives.”

Jeannie An, research services librarian at McMaster University and also a member of the Selection Working Group, echoed this sentiment. “The overwhelming number of qualified applicants underscores the vital need for the ARL Leadership & Career Development Program.
