The Practical Nursing Program at Penn College at Wellsboro, offered through the Northern Tier Career Center, provides a comprehensive pathway to launch your nursing career. To help prospective students understand the program fully, Penn College at Wellsboro is hosting three information sessions. These sessions will take place on March 2, March 16, and April 6, all at 6:30 p.m. Each session will be held at the Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Wellsboro campus, located at 22 Walnut St. To broaden accessibility, these sessions will also be connected via Zoom to the Potter County Education Council, ensuring individuals from Potter County can easily participate.

Lauren M. Scheetz, the assistant director of the Practical Nursing Program, will lead these informative sessions. She will cover essential aspects of the program, including admission requirements, the application process, tuition costs, and available financial aid options. Attendees will also gain valuable information about the licensure process upon graduation and the diverse job opportunities available for program graduates in the practical nursing field. Each session will conclude with a Q&A segment, providing a platform for attendees to ask questions and receive direct answers.

For those eager to begin their practical nursing education promptly, the next full-time class is scheduled to commence on March 14, 2023, with an anticipated graduation date of March 12, 2024. This intensive 12-month program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge for a successful LPN career.

Recognizing the diverse needs of students, a part-time, evening/weekend Practical Nursing program option is also available. This program is set to begin on June 8, 2023, with graduation slated for March 25, 2025. This flexible format allows individuals to pursue their nursing education while managing other commitments.

Admission to the Practical Nursing Program requires applicants to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and achieve a minimum passing score. It is important to note that an application to the Wellsboro office must be submitted before taking the TEAS. To be considered for the upcoming classes, ensure your completed application materials and pre-entrance requirements are submitted by February 27 for the March class and by May 26 for the June class.

The full-time Practical Nursing program classes are conveniently held at Penn College’s Wellsboro campus. Students will gain hands-on clinical experience at various local healthcare facilities, including UPMC Wellsboro, the Green Home, and Broad Acres Health and Rehabilitation Center. Students from Potter County, participating through the Education Council in Coudersport, will complete their clinical experiences at UPMC Cole and Sweden Valley Manor, among other facilities.

The Practical Nursing program holds approval from the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. Successful completion of this program prepares graduates to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN). Passing this exam is required to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN). Furthermore, the program serves as a stepping stone for those aspiring to become registered nurses (RNs), with educational opportunities available for career advancement.

This Practical Nursing program operates on a clock-hour basis and is specifically designed by Workforce Development at Penn College in Williamsport. Financial aid options to support students include Federal Pell Grants, Federal Direct Loans, and Pennsylvania Targeted Industry Program (PA-TIP) awards, making the program accessible to a wide range of individuals.
