For those dedicated to advancing their expertise in pediatric cardiac critical care, fellowship programs represent the gold standard in specialized training. While not currently accredited by the ACGME, these advanced fellowships are widely recognized across the US and Canada as the benchmark for developing proficient pediatric cardiac intensivists. This consensus statement from the PCICS Subcommittee of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Training Program Directors outlines the essential information for prospective applicants.
A collaborative effort among programs in the United States and Canada has established a streamlined common application process and timeline for fellowship positions commencing in July 2025. To begin your application journey, please complete the initial registration questionnaire available through the PCICS website portal here. Upon registration, you will receive a direct link to the common application form. It is important to note that candidates are responsible for submitting the completed application directly to each program of interest.
In a significant step to standardize and simplify the fellowship application process, the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (PCICS) is sponsoring a formal cardiac critical care fellowship match through SF Match, starting this year. Participation in this match is optional for training programs, however, a strong majority, at least 75%, are anticipated to participate. A comprehensive list of programs participating in the formal match will be published by PCICS after October 1, 2024. For programs choosing not to participate in the match, fellowship offers will be extended no earlier than the official match date.
Key Dates for the 2024-2025 Application Cycle:
July 1, 2024: The PCICS website registration will open, and the common application form will be accessible online. This date also marks the beginning of the application review period, with Program Directors accepting completed applications. Applicants should submit their materials via email directly to each program they are applying to.
July – October 2024: During this period, programs will thoroughly review submitted applications and conduct virtual interview days. While interviews are primarily virtual, applicants are encouraged to contact programs directly to explore possibilities for in-person visits to gain a deeper understanding of the program environment.
October 1, 2024: This is the final date for programs to decide and opt-out of participating in the formal fellowship match process.
December 5, 2024: The deadline for both programs and applicants to submit their final rank lists for the match. Information regarding the website for applicant match registration and rank list submission will be released as soon as it becomes available.
December 12, 2024: Match Day. This pivotal date also marks the first day that programs not participating in the match can extend fellowship offers.
