Algonquin College Critical Care Nursing Program: Your Path to Expertise

Embarking on a career in critical care nursing demands specialized knowledge and hands-on experience. The Algonquin College Critical Care Nursing Program is meticulously designed to equip aspiring nurses with the advanced skills and competencies required to excel in this challenging yet rewarding field. This program culminates in an integrated practicum, a crucial component that bridges theoretical learning with real-world application in critical care environments.

The Cornerstone Practicum Experience

The practicum is the capstone of the Algonquin College Critical Care Nursing Program, providing 120 hours of invaluable clinical practice. This immersive experience takes place within a dynamic adult critical care setting, allowing students to translate classroom knowledge into practical expertise. Under the direct guidance of experienced critical care nurses, serving as preceptors and mentors, and with the support of Algonquin College faculty advisors, students will refine their skills and demonstrate competency in the Standards of Practice for Critical Care Nursing in Ontario. This hands-on component ensures graduates are not just academically prepared, but also clinically confident and ready to contribute meaningfully to critical care teams.

Certification and Advanced Standing Opportunities

Upon successful completion of the Algonquin College Critical Care Nursing Program, participants are awarded a distinguished critical care certificate, a testament to their specialized training and dedication. Algonquin College recognizes prior learning and experience. Transfer credit, advanced standing, or program challenges are assessed on an individual basis, offering flexible pathways for students with previous relevant education or professional backgrounds. For detailed inquiries regarding these opportunities, prospective students are encouraged to visit the Algonquin College website or directly contact the program coordinator.

Practicum Placements: Expanding Horizons Beyond Ontario

Recognizing the diverse needs and locations of our student body, Algonquin College may accommodate practicum placements outside of Ontario, within Canada. For students residing and working outside the province, these out-of-province placements are considered on a case-by-case basis. Crucially, the feasibility of such placements hinges on establishing an affiliation agreement between Algonquin College and the prospective out-of-Ontario healthcare organization. Students considering a practicum placement outside of Ontario are required to proactively declare their intentions to Algonquin College prior to formally accepting their admission into the program. This early notification is essential to initiate the necessary arrangements and ensure a seamless practicum experience.

To discuss and arrange an out-of-Ontario practicum placement, please contact the Algonquin College Critical Care Nursing Program team at the designated program email address.

Essential Pre-Placement Requirements: Preparing for Your Clinical Experience

Students undertaking a practicum outside of their current employer are required to fulfill specific pre-placement documentation requirements. It is important to note that certain costs are associated with these requirements, including Electronic Requirements Verification (ERV) service fees, mandatory immunizations, required lab tests, and essential certifications. Students are advised to retain all receipts for potential income tax purposes.

Mandatory pre-placement requirements, facilitated through Verified, Algonquin College’s documentation collection and ERV verification partner, include:

  • Criminal Reference Check (CRC) with Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS): A clear and current CRC with VSS is mandatory. Failure to provide a satisfactory CRC with VSS may impact placement eligibility. This check must be obtained from your local police station and may need to be updated before each placement term to align with agency requirements.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Mask Fit Testing: Current Level-C CPR certification and mask fit testing from a recognized provider are essential prerequisites for practicum placement.
  • Immunization Form: Completion of the entry immunization form by a qualified healthcare provider is required to ensure student and patient safety within the clinical environment.
