Programming Your Genie Garage Door Opener to Your Car’s Remote System

Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system, whether it’s HomeLink or Car2U, offers unparalleled convenience. Imagine effortlessly opening your garage door as you arrive home without fumbling for a separate remote. These integrated systems, typically featuring three buttons located on your car’s visor or ceiling, are powered directly by your vehicle, eliminating the need for batteries and ensuring consistent operation. Genie garage door openers are fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U, making the programming process straightforward and user-friendly. HomeLink systems are identifiable by a single LED indicator and often display a house icon on the central button, while Car2U systems feature three LED lights, one above each button.

Programming Your HomeLink® System

For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the HomeLink Programming Guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.

Step 1: Clearing Existing HomeLink Programming

To begin, it’s recommended to clear any previous programming from your HomeLink system. This ensures a clean slate for programming your Genie garage door opener.

  1. Press and hold the first and third buttons on your HomeLink system simultaneously.
  2. Continue holding until the indicator light on the HomeLink starts to blink slowly, then rapidly. This process should take approximately 20 seconds.
  3. Once the indicator blinks rapidly, release both buttons. Your HomeLink system is now cleared and ready for programming.

NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices, including other garage door openers or gate systems.

Step 2: Training HomeLink with Your Genie Remote

Next, you will train your HomeLink system to recognize the signal from your Genie garage door opener remote.

  1. Select the HomeLink button you wish to use for your Genie garage door opener.
  2. Position your Genie remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button.
  3. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door.
  4. While still holding the Genie remote button, press and hold the selected HomeLink button simultaneously.
  5. Keep both buttons pressed until the indicator light on the HomeLink changes from a slow blink to a rapid blink.
  6. Once the rapid blinking begins, release both buttons. HomeLink has now learned the frequency from your Genie remote.

Step 3: Programming HomeLink to Your Genie Opener

The final step involves programming your HomeLink system directly to your Genie garage door opener unit. The procedure varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie model.

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Program” Button:

  1. Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. This button is usually found on the motor unit in your garage.
  2. Press and hold the PROGRAM button until a round blue LED illuminates. Once lit, release the button. A long purple LED will then begin to flash, indicating programming mode.
  3. Immediately return to your car and press the chosen HomeLink button for two seconds, then release. Repeat this process by pressing and releasing the same HomeLink button a second time for two seconds.
  4. Observe the long LED on your garage door opener. It should flash blue and then turn off, confirming successful communication.
  5. To finalize the programming, press the HomeLink button a few more times until your garage door begins to move.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Learn” Button:

  1. Locate the learn code button (often labeled “Learn”) on your Genie garage door opener powerhead.
  2. Press and release the learn code button. A red LED indicator will start to blink, signaling that the opener is in learning mode.
  3. Within 30 seconds, press the desired HomeLink button in your car one time. The red LED on the garage door opener should stop blinking and remain on solid.
  4. Press the same HomeLink button a second time. The red LED will now turn off.
  5. Pressing the HomeLink button again should now activate your garage door, confirming successful programming.

NOTE: For further assistance, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual, visit HomeLink’s official website, or the Genie Company website.

  1. Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 for ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs will illuminate solid red.
  2. Press and hold the Car2U button you want to assign to Genie (either button 2 or 3). While holding it, press and release button 1, then press and release button 1 again. The LED corresponding to the button you are holding (button 2 or 3) will flash.
  3. Release the button you are holding (button 2 or 3) and wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now configured for your Genie opener. Repeat this step if you need to program a second Car2U button for another Genie opener.
