Development and Validation of the NACE Career Readiness Competencies

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) launched its Career Readiness Initiative in 2015 to address a critical need identified by both new college graduates and the professionals dedicated to their career development and recruitment. The initiative aimed to establish a shared understanding of the essential elements for launching and nurturing a successful career. This included developing a common vocabulary for discussing needs and expectations, and defining a fundamental set of competencies upon which career success is built. This initiative underscores the importance and structure of career readiness programs.

An initial task force, composed of NACE members from both career services and university relations and recruiting departments, collaborated to develop the foundational career readiness definition and the associated core competencies. These initial frameworks were subsequently reviewed and updated in 2017 by a member task force to incorporate valuable feedback from professionals actively utilizing the competencies with students in career readiness programs.

Furthermore, following the initial launch, NACE undertook significant efforts to identify specific behaviors demonstrably linked to each competency. This validation process involved a strategic partnership with SkillSurvey to rigorously validate these behavioral indicators.

In 2020, a dedicated member task force was assembled to review and revise the competencies as deemed necessary. Concurrently, NACE and SkillSurvey completed a crucial phase of their validation work, focusing on identifying concrete sample behaviors associated with each competency. As part of this iterative process, the task force formulated recommendations for revisions and presented them to the broader NACE membership for comprehensive feedback. Over 300 NACE members contributed valuable recommendations and comments. The resulting revised competencies reflect these collective member insights, ensuring the ongoing relevance and effectiveness of career readiness programs grounded in these principles.
